Sept 9-12 – Orono Fair takes place at the Orono Fairgrounds, 2 Princess St. The largest Midway in its 158th history. New acts will include: Jungle Jack for the kiddies, Dirty Dishes country rockabilly and even an Elvis impersonator. Old favourites: Heavy Horse Pull, Truck n’ Tractor Pulls, Live Pro Wrestling with Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka and the ever popular Demolition Derby on Sunday. Be sure to attend on Thursday night and get two-for-one admission to the fair and partake in toonie night at the midway. Sept 11 – 2nd Annual Northern Lyte's Strongman Contest at Legion Park, Coboconk. Registration starts at 9am; games start at 11am. Spectators are asked to bring a non-perishable food donation or cash donations as all proceeds are donated to the Coboconk Food Bank. A new women’s class has been added this year. The local fire department is also involved, BBQ burgers and sausages and drinks for sale on site. Events include: log press, farmers walk, deadlift, tire flip, truck pull, and atlas stones.
Sept 11 –There’s still time for young musicians to sign up for the Kawartha Youth Orchestra’s 2010/2011 Season. The Kawartha region’s premiere youth orchestra is holding auditions for all orchestral instruments at the Sadleir House, 751 George St. Young musicians from 12 to 24 are invited to apply for openings in the strings, winds, brass and percussion sections. Sept 12 – The Winners Walk of Hope is Turning Up the Volume! on ovarian cancer. Bring your family and friends to the Winners Walk of Hope at the Lakefield Rotary Trail at Trent University, beside the Environmental Sciences Bldg. at Nassau Mills Rd. & East Bank Drive in Ptbo. Sept 12 – Out of the Ashes Free Opening Day at the Scugog Shores Heritage Centre and Archives , 1655 Reach St., Port Perry from 1-4pm to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the rebuilding of Port Perry after the July 4, 1884 horrific fire spread through the town destroying much of the downtown core. Come and see how local artists have interpreted the emotional impact, personal loss, and community strength that such an experience presented to the town and its citizens. All original pieces of art will also be available for sale when the exhibit closes. Runs until November 7th

Sept 14 – The Kawartha Stamp Club meets at Immanuel Alliance Church, at 1600 Sherbrooke Street West [just west of the water tower] between 6:30 and 9pm. Sept 16 – Hospice Peterborough Palliative Care Volunteer Training starts Sept 16th for 10 weeks - a 30-hour course for people interested in providing support for individuals living with life-threatening illness. The course explores issues related to death and dying, supporting people who are grieving and care for the caregiver. This course will introduce you to the concepts of hospice care and prepare you for supporting individuals following the guidelines of Hospice’s philosophy of care. Sept 19 – When Terry Fox recognized that he would not be able to complete his Marathon of Hope for cancer research in 1980, he bequeathed his mission to his fellow Canadians and The Terry Fox Run began.
